It should come as no surprise that Lake Burley Griffin, with its glistening water and miles upon miles of peaceful coastline, is considered by many to be the city of Canberra’s centerpiece. In point of fact, there is no better way for locals to refer to it than simply “The Lake.”
Here are several ways to make the most of your time at Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, including airborne excursions and eateries along the water’s edge.
EXPLORE BY PADDLEBOARD
There is no shortage of fun things to do in and around Lake Burley Griffin, including getting out on the lake and trying new things. Stand-up paddleboarding is among the most enjoyable methods to experience the placid surface of the lake.
SupCbr offers beginner students the opportunity to participate in group lessons. If you feel more comfortable venturing out on your own, you may rent a stand-up paddleboard and go exploring on your own.
Join Jo from Joga Yoga for Canberra’s first stand-up paddleboard (SUP) yoga session on Lake Burley Griffin for a more difficult workout and try some positions while standing on top of the water.
CYCLE THE SHORELINE
In Canberra, cyclists are privileged with a variety of routes to choose from, and among of the greatest trails to ride are the ones that circle around the glittering coastline of Lake Burley Griffin.
You have your choice of many routes ranging from 3 to 8 miles (5 to 14 kilometers), or you may round the whole lake, which is about 30 kilometers (18.6mi).
Along the journey, you are likely to stumble across hidden treasures such as the traditional Chinese welcome gate that is located in Lennox Gardens. Canberra Cycle is the place you go to rent a bicycle.
FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A HOT-AIR BALLOON, MARVEL
Lake Burley Griffin is stunning from any vantage point, but seeing it from above in a hot air balloon is an especially breathtaking experience.
You will be lifted into the air and drift lazily over the lake and the city when you go ballooning with Balloon Aloft. Admire the breathtaking vistas before making your way down to the Hyatt Hotel for a celebratory toast with champagne.
Where to go when
Attend the Canberra Balloon Spectacular in the month of March to see hundreds of hot air balloons sail over the lake as the sun rises.
SET OUT TO SEA IN A GO-BOAT.
Picnics around Lake Burley Griffin are wonderful, but why not take things to the next level by having your lunch out on the lake?
GoBoat provides electric picnic boats that provide customers the ability to navigate their own vessels all around the lake. GoBoats have seating for up to eight people, so round up your friends and pack a lunch for an experience you won’t soon forget.
PADDLE AROUND THE LAKE
If you want to get some exercise while also having a chance to unwind on the water, then you should get a paddle boat in the classic design from Capital Paddle and get started on your journey.
These pedal-powered boats for two people can be seen at Regatta Point, and they are every bit as colorful as they are entertaining. To get a unique perspective of some of Canberra’s most famous landmarks from the water, rent a kayak for a couple of hours.
WALK ABOUT FROM ONE BRIDGE TO ANOTHER BRIDGE
Walk down one of the city’s most well-known paths as if you were a native of the area. Located around five kilometers apart, the Kings Avenue Bridge and the Commonwealth Bridge may be reached by foot through the Bridge to Bridge trek (three miles).
Along the trip, you will go by numerous of Canberra’s historical and cultural landmarks, such as Commonwealth Park and the Australian of the Year Walk. On the latter, chronological plaques display the names of every individual who has ever been awarded the renowned “Australian of the Year” title.
DRINK AND DINE AT WATERFRONT VENUES
The area around Lake Burley Griffin is not just a beautiful natural setting, but it also has an up-and-coming culinary and drinking scene.
A number of establishments, serving anything from coffee in the morning to cocktails in the evening, may be found in close proximity to the water’s edge.
You should begin the day at the Local Press Café, then go to Walt & Burley for lunch, then have dinner at The Boat House, and finish the night off with drinks at the Armada Outdoor Bar.
